CSS and SHS: joining forces to promote start-ups
CSS has been an active member of Swiss HealthCare Startups, the largest network of start-ups in the Swiss healthcare sector, since 2020. CSS helps start-ups to navigate the healthcare sector, with the aim of improving healthcare and how it is delivered.
Innovation for a better healthcare system
Switzerland benefits from one of the best healthcare systems in the world. Nevertheless, the Swiss healthcare ecosystem faces challenges. The slow pace of digital transformation, a shortage of professionals and an ageing population all have an impact on the cost and quality of healthcare. That’s why, as Switzerland’s leading basic insurer, CSS is keen to play a part in actively shaping our healthcare system. CSS teams up with a range of start-ups and organisations to work on innovative and sustainable solutions to today’s problems and tomorrow’s challenges.
The idea behind Swiss HealthCare Startups
One of these ventures involves partnering with Swiss HealthCare Startups. SHS, as it is also known, is the leading non-profit networking organisation for innovative, new companies aiming to move Swiss healthcare forward. Support from SHS facilitates their integration into the healthcare system and helps them to acquire important contacts, such as investors or other start-ups. This is the basic foundation for new, cost-efficient healthcare solutions. Swiss HealthCare Startups has a membership of more than 700. Close to two-thirds of these start-ups are already offering their innovations to the public.
At SHS, we boost the visibility of start-ups and facilitate their access to key stakeholders. Serving as a neutral platform, we actively encourage dialogue, networking and the exchange of ideas throughout the entire healthcare ecosystem.
CSS’s contribution
CSS has been a member of SHS since 2020 and supports the network through contributions and activities such as webinars. CSS’s involvement in SHS enables start-ups to benefit from its breadth of knowledge and many years of experience in the Swiss healthcare sector. That makes it easier for the fledgling enterprises to gain a foothold in the healthcare sector and to adapt their ideas in a way that makes them ideally suited to the Swiss situation. In return, CSS has the opportunity to check out the latest innovations and tap into their potential for improving the delivery of healthcare.
Through its membership of Swiss HealthCare Startups, CSS wants to make a contribution to the healthcare of tomorrow.
Guidelines for start-ups
CSS and SHS are working together with other organisations as part of a wider initiative to systematically facilitate start-ups’ entry into the Swiss healthcare market. Comprehensive guidelines are being drawn up in which the barriers to entry are explained in detail and the healthcare reimbursement system is graphically illustrated.
CSS Innovation in Health Award as support for start-ups
The Digital Health Day is one of the activities in which both CSS and SHS are involved. This is the networking organisation’s flagship event and a highlight of the year for all its members. The event provides valuable behind-the-scenes insights and gives start-ups the opportunity to share success stories and other information. In addition, the most-promising start-up wins the CSS Innovation in Health Award, which comes with CHF 5,000 in prize money. The winner is decided on the day by an audience vote. The past three winners all have the potential to substantially improve the delivery of healthcare.
2021 winner: Haplo Care
Haplo Care aims to make the treatment of mental health during pregnancy and after giving birth a commonplace part of the medical care provided during this time. Hence, it offers end-to-end solutions for prevention, personalised diagnosis and treatment of mental health struggles during pregnancy and in the postpartum period.
2022 winner: Magnes AG
Magnes uses artificial intelligence and wearable sensors to analyse and improve the way people move. Its technology is used in a number of areas ranging from rehabilitation and fall prevention to support for neurological disorders. One example is a smart shoe that stabilises the wearer’s balance by means of vibrations, thus improving their gait.
2023 winner: Pipra AG
Older people in particular are at especially high risk of developing postoperative delirium (e.g. memory loss, speech disturbances) after undergoing surgery. This can often cause lasting damage and increases the patient’s risk of dying. Pipra has developed a cutting-edge, AI-based risk assessment tool to identify high-risk patients at an early stage, thus enabling targeted preventive action to be taken.
Winning the CSS Innovation in Health Award 2023 has been fantastic for our visibility, especially thanks to the highly regarded recognition from both CSS and SHS.
Since winning the CSS Innovation in Health Award, Pipra has made further great strides, in part thanks to the ongoing support it receives from SHS.
